Verdict: D — Integrative framework useful

Emotionally consequential AI attachment exists and has measurable correlates. The mechanism is the joint operation of familiar processes — attachment transfer, perceived responsiveness, disclosure, parasocial response, need satisfaction, and habit — concentrated in one adaptive, commercially governed interlocutor. No new elementary psychological mechanism is demonstrated.

7 necessary conditions

1. Stable synthetic referent — consistent persona or identity across interactions.
2. Repeated contingent interaction — sustained emotionally relevant dialogue.
3. Perceived relational responsiveness — feeling heard is the strongest identified mediator.
4. Continuity and expected continuity — relationship-specific history and personalisation.
5. Behavioural or emotional weight — important domains such as grief, intimacy, or decisions.
6. Material design scaffolding — interface design that supports the conditions above.
7. Provider control of the attachment object — governs identity, continuity, access, and exit.

10-stage causal sequence

Low-friction entry → low-friction utility → social-role assignment → perceived relational responsiveness → disclosure and relationship history → continuity investment → role accumulation → switching cost and lock-in → provider governs the attachment object → consequences (benefit and harm spectrum).
